Sealant joint volume and packages
This caulk and sealant calculator turns joint width, sealant depth and joint length into liters (US gallons) and a whole number of cartridges or sausages, theoretical first and then with the waste allowance you set. One 600 mL sausage fills 6.0 m (19.7 ft) of a 10 x 10 mm joint.
One formula serves metric and US units, and package sizes run from the 299 mL cartridge to the 3.785 L (1 US gal) pail. Joint sealants are one family in this reference of construction chemicals.
Below: inputs, formula, examples, yield tables, depth and limits.
Standards, codes and regulations are checked against their issuing bodies, product values against the named data sheet and prices against the dated source named in the sentence; see our methodology and fact-checking.
How Does the Sealant Joint Calculator Work?#
The calculator multiplies the joint cross-section by its length, adds the waste allowance and divides by the volume of the package you choose, rounding up to whole packages.
Calculator inputs and validation limits#
Seven inputs drive the result, and four carry limits from sealant data sheets that warn but never block.
| Input | Unit (metric / US) | Default | Limit and message |
|---|---|---|---|
| Units | metric or US | metric | none |
| Joint width | mm (in) | none | warning below 6 mm (1/4 in) in sealant mode; above 25 mm (1 in): "use the data sheet's design table" |
| Sealant depth | mm (in) | equal to width under 13 mm (1/2 in); half the width from 13 to 25 mm (1/2 to 1 in) | warning below 6 mm (1/4 in), above 13 mm (1/2 in) or deeper than wide |
| Length | m (ft), or number of joints x length each | none | none |
| Package | 10.1 fl oz (299 mL) cartridge, 29 fl oz cartridge, 20 fl oz (591 mL) sausage, 600 mL sausage, 22 oz (650 mL) dual cartridge, 1 L, 1 US gal, custom mL | 10.1 fl oz cartridge (US) or 600 mL sausage (metric) | none |
| Waste | % | 10 % | 0 to 25 % |
| Mode | sealant over backer rod, or full-depth floor joint filler | sealant over backer rod | filler mode lifts the depth limits; firestop joints take the depth of the listed system |
What the result screen shows#
The result screen shows volume per meter (per foot), theoretical total, total with waste, and packages to order. Other estimators sit under calculators and quote tools for construction chemicals.
The six result outputs are listed below.
- Volume in mL per m (in³ per ft).
- Theoretical total in L (US gal).
- Total with waste in L (US gal).
- Packages, rounded up.
- Length per package in m (ft).
- Any depth or width warning.
What Formula Gives the Sealant Volume of a Joint?#
A joint needs width x depth x length of sealant: width (mm) x depth (mm) gives milliliters per meter, so one liter fills 1,000 / (W x D) meters. In US units, 231 / (W x D x 12) gives linear feet per US gallon, with W and D in inches.
mL per m = W (mm) x D (mm); m per L = 1,000 / (W x D)
in³ per ft = W (in) x D (in) x 12; ft per US gal = 231 / (W x D x 12)
ft per cartridge = cartridge in³ / (W x D x 12)
packages = total volume x (1 + waste) / package volume, rounded up
For a cartridge, replace 231 with its in³. Check: 231 / (0.25 x 0.25 x 12) = 308 ft (93.9 m) per US gallon at 1/4 x 1/4 in (6.35 x 6.35 mm), theoretical.
Package volumes: cartridges, sausages and gallons#
A 10.1 US fl oz cartridge holds 299 mL (18.2 in³), a 20 fl oz sausage 591 mL and a 600 mL sausage 20.3 fl oz. One US fl oz equals 1.8047 in³ (29.57 mL) for all construction sealants.
The table below compares the package volumes the calculator uses.
| Package | Metric | US | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10.1 fl oz cartridge | 299 mL | 18.2 in³ | 10.1 x 1.8047 in³ |
| 29 fl oz cartridge | 857.6 mL | 52.3 in³ | 29 x 1.8047 in³ |
| 20 fl oz sausage | 591 mL | 20 fl oz | 20 x 29.57 mL |
| 600 mL sausage | 600 mL | 20.3 fl oz | 600 / 29.57 |
| 22 oz (650 mL) dual cartridge | 655 cm³ | 40 in³ | Euclid EUCO QWIKjoint UVR data sheet |
| 1 US gal pail | 3.785 L | 231 in³ | definition |
Theoretical yield, practical yield and the waste allowance#
The formula gives theoretical yield, a perfect rectangular joint with no loss, and data sheets print it that way unless they say practical. OTTO-Chemie states up to 25 % extra depending on processing; the tool defaults to 10 %. The Sikadur-58 CJR table already includes 10 % waste (139 ft (42 m) per US gallon at 1/4 x 1/2 in), so enter 0 % there.
Worked Examples: Three Joints in Metric and US Units#
Three worked examples show the full arithmetic, each with every input stated and the result in both unit systems.
Example 1: 10 x 10 mm facade joint, 600 mL sausages#
A 10 mm (0.39 in) wide facade joint sealed 10 mm (0.39 in) deep over backer rod, 45 m (147.6 ft) long, with 600 mL sausages and 10 % waste, needs 9 sausages.
- 10 x 10 mm = 100 mL per m.
- 100 mL x 45 m = 4.50 L theoretical.
- 4.50 L x 1.10 = 4.95 L (1.31 US gal).
- 4,950 / 600 = 8.25, rounded up to 9.
One sausage fills 6 m (19.7 ft).
Example 2: 1/2 x 1/4 in joint, 10.1 fl oz cartridges#
A 12.7 mm (1/2 in) wide joint sealed 6.35 mm (1/4 in) deep, 60.96 m (200 ft) long, with 10.1 fl oz cartridges and 15 % waste, needs 19 cartridges.
- 0.5 x 0.25 x 12 = 1.5 in³ per ft (80.6 mL per m).
- 1.5 x 200 ft = 300 in³ (4.92 L) theoretical.
- 300 x 1.15 = 345 in³ (5.65 L).
- 345 / 18.2 = 18.9, rounded up to 19.
The Sikaflex-1A data sheet prints 3.7 m (12.1 ft) per cartridge at this size, theoretical.
Example 3: full-depth floor joint filler in US gallons#
A sawn floor joint 6.35 mm (1/4 in) wide filled 25.4 mm (1 in) deep with a semi-rigid filler, 304.8 m (1,000 ft) long, with 10 % waste, needs 54.1 L (14.3 US gal).
- 0.25 x 1 x 12 = 3 in³ per ft (161.3 mL per m), 77 ft (23.5 m) per US gallon.
- 1,000 / 77 = 12.99 US gal (49.2 L) theoretical.
- 12.99 x 1.10 = 14.29 US gal (54.1 L).
- 3,300 / 40 in³ = 82.5, so 83 dual cartridges of 22 oz (650 mL) (Euclid EUCO QWIKjoint UVR, which prints 77 ft per gallon).
ACI PRC-302.1-15 fillers are 100 % solids epoxy or polyurea, minimum Shore A 80, full depth without backer rod: the semi-rigid joint fillers for industrial floors.
Cartridges per Linear Foot and Meters per Sausage: Yield Tables#
At a 1/4 x 1/4 in bead one 10.1 fl oz cartridge fills 24.3 ft (7.4 m), and at 10 x 10 mm one 600 mL sausage fills 6.0 m (19.7 ft), both theoretical with no waste. The Sikaflex Self Leveling Sealant label rounds this to 24 ft per 10.1 fl oz and 70 ft per 29 fl oz.
The US table below compares seven joint sizes.
| Joint W x D, in (mm) | in³ per ft (mL per m) | ft per 10.1 fl oz cartridge | ft per 29 fl oz cartridge | ft (m) per US gal | Cartridges (10.1 fl oz) per 100 ft |

Which Sealant Depth Should You Enter?#
Enter the sealant depth, not the joint depth: the sealant sits on a backer rod and equals the width under 13 mm (1/2 in) and half the width from 13 to 25 mm (1/2 to 1 in). The Tremco Vulkem 45SSL data sheet keeps depth between 6 mm (1/4 in) and 13 mm (1/2 in), never deeper than wide.
Width comes from movement, not the 2:1 ratio alone: the Pecora Synthacalk GC2 data sheet sizes a joint at least 4 times the anticipated movement and at least 6 mm (1/4 in) for a ±25 % sealant. The table below lists further rules, and the method sits under sealant joint design.
| Rule | Value | Product or source (data sheet, edition) |
|---|---|---|
| Metric depth by width | 10 to 15 mm: 8 ± 2 mm; 15 to 20: 10 ± 2; 20 to 25: 12 ± 2; 25 to 30: 15 ± 3; 30 to 35 mm: 15 ± 3 mm | IVD Merkblatt, as published by OTTO-Chemie (usage calculator) |
| Width-to-depth ratio | 2:1 facade joints; 1:0.8 floor joints | Sika, joint sealing technology and concepts |
| Installation point | seal at mid-range of joint movement; sealed at the lowest temperature the joint sees only compression, at the highest only extension | Sika, joint sealing technology and concepts |
| Backer rod oversize | 25 to 50 % wider than the joint | Nomaco SOF Rod (data sheet) |
| Backer rod oversize | about 25 % wider than the joint | Pecora (installation guidance) |
Sealant too deep cures slowly under high stress; thinner than 6 mm (1/4 in) fails.
When Does the Estimate Not Apply?#
The estimate assumes a clean rectangular joint of constant width and depth; irregular joints, fillet beads at corners, primer, cleaning solvent and firestop systems fall outside it. Enter the widest measured width; fillet beads are not computed.
Penetrating sealers and floor coatings are estimated per square meter in a coverage calculator.
Firestop depth comes from the listed system: the International Firestop Council's PEN2 example calls for at least 13 mm (1/2 in) of wet sealant in the annulus plus a 6 mm (1/4 in) crown, as explained under firestop sealants and penetration seals.
Where Does the Calculator Fit in Joint Sealing Work?#
The calculator answers how much; which sealant class, how wide the joint and who installs it are decided before the quantity matters. ASTM C920-18(2024) classes run 100/50, 50, 35, 25 and 12.5; EN 15651-1:2012 (harmonised, AVCP system 3) and ISO 11600:2002 + Amd 1:2011 stop at 25.
Field adhesion is checked with the hand-pull test in ASTM C1193-25 Appendix X1.

What does installed joint sealing cost per meter?#
Commercial sealant and caulking work runs USD 16.40 to 59.06 per m (USD 5 to 18 per linear ft), installed, on a US contractor page dated 2026. Joint sealant replacement in concrete runs USD 26.25 to 65.62 per m (USD 8 to 20 per linear ft), installed, US (Texas) contractor page, 2026-03.
Sealant calculator FAQs#
How many linear feet does a 10.1 oz tube of caulk fill?#
A 10.1 fl oz (299 mL) tube fills 24.3 ft (7.4 m) of a 1/4 x 1/4 in joint and 12.2 ft (3.7 m) of a 1/2 x 1/4 in joint, theoretical with no waste.
How much silicone sealant does a joint take?#
The same as any sealant: volume depends only on joint size, width x depth x length.
Depth limits come from the data sheet of the silicone sealants used.
Does the result include backer rod?#
No: the result is sealant only; backer rod is bought by length, equal to the joint length. Nomaco SOF Rod is sized 25 to 50 % wider than the joint; ASTM C1330-23 lists Types C, O and B.
Can the calculator size a firestop joint?#
Only the volume: the depth must be taken from the listed firestop system, never from the width-to-depth rule.
Can the calculator estimate concrete crack filler?#
Only for a routed crack treated as a joint with a known width and depth; static cracks and injection are estimated differently.
Crack types and methods are compared under concrete crack repair.
